Characteristics of PinnacleR Radiation Treatment Planning System

Abstract
Purpose : We have used the OncentraR as a Radiation Treatment Planning System (RTP) in our hospital. Recently, updated Pinnacle system, release 9.10, is introduced, which can run dynamic /static intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) using direct machine parameter optimization (DMPO) and SmartArc. For the stable and effective clinical application of the new Pinnacle system, comparative analysis with the existing RTP and its intrinsic characteristics are sought.

Materials and Methods : The characteristics supported by the Pinnacle system are evaluated according to the following five criteria. (1) Patient's administration and image view, (2) Planning activity, (3) Image fusion, (4) Plan review activity, (5) Comparison with existing RTP

Results : Pinnacle RTP can be run on a personal computer with the Solaris UNIX operating system or a UNIX terminal emulation package, and can enter patient management data, CT simulation information, target into the system. It can also implement 2D/3D planning, IMRT / VMAT planning and optimize radiation therapy planning with various plan evaluation tool in a user friendly manner. It can also be connected to other Pinnacle, Syntegra, PC Access Point, P©øMD, AcQSim, P©øIMRT workstations or input and output devices with versatile networking capability. In 3D conformal planning, the total treatment planning time was 6.7 min (¡¾2.1 min, n=5) faster in the prostate and 7.4 min (¡¾3.3 min, n=5) faster in the breast compared to the conventional Oncentra RTP. Though there was no difference of the homogenity/conformity index representing the tumor coverage in the prostate IMRT planning compared to MonacoR 5.10 RTP provided by ELEKTA, the calculation time in total treatment plan time was 2.5 min (¡¾1.1 min, n=5) faster.

Conclusion : Based on the advantages of the Pinnacle system obtained from this study, it will be possible to build an efficient RTP system and conduct a more rapid and precise radiation therapy.
